Seeds Type

Recalcitrant, that is to say seeds that cannot withstand desiccation and temperatures below freezing point; therefore cannot be stored in a cool, dry place for several months.

For germination you may...

1. proceed directly to sowing, without subjecting the seeds to any prior treatment.

Scarification : No scarification needed.
Stratification : No stratification needed.
Seedlings : Take care not breaking the germ (if there is one) and not turning the nuts (acorns) over on themselves (as far as possible, leave them in the position in which they were kept). Bury lightly, less than a centimeter from the surface of the soil.
Comments : Storage of nuts (acorns) - while waiting for planting - should be done so they are lying on their side, as when falling to the ground. It might be wise to place them in a germination tray containing about 5 cm of moist (not too much) growth medium and put everything in the refrigerator until the spring. This is the best method we have found to limit the development of mold on nuts (acorns). This often happens when storing English oak nuts (acorns) in a closed bag, even if stored in a cool dry place like a refrigerator.
